Catechu
Trunk-derived by-product
Catechu, an extract from acacia trees, has been used since ancient times as a medicinal material and spice in many regions, including France and Italy. As a dye, it has traditionally been used to give fishing nets, sails and even vodka a brown colour. Rich in natural plant tannins, catechu mixtures have also been used in tanning animal hides.
